From application to insured, in Martin
- 1Apply for temporary residence for study
Health insurance is not an attachment to your first application, and the police do not need it to accept it.
- 2Collect your residence card in Ružomberok
Foreign Police Department Ružomberok, Námestie Andreja Hlinku 74, 034 01 Ružomberok, 6th floor. Martin has no Foreign Police office of its own: the Martin district is served by the office in Ružomberok. Book the visit in the Ministry of Interior's online booking system. Booking system (minv.sk)
- 3Be insured within 3 working days
The law gives you 3 working days after collecting the card. With klido you can be insured the same day, from your phone.
- 4Keep the confirmation
Union e-mails it after payment, and it stays in your klido account. Students do not hand it in, but must show it at a police check.

Questions students in Martin ask
I only study one semester. Is a semester policy enough?
Yes. Choose the length of your stay: €160 for 5 months covers a winter or summer semester. If you stay longer, extend it from your account before it ends.
Is urgent-care insurance (Simple) enough for a student residence permit?
Yes. The law asks only for a confirmation that you are health insured in Slovakia and sets no minimum cover or sum insured (Act No. 404/2011, § 123), and the Foreign Police accepts Union Simple. It covers urgent and acute care, accidents, hospital stays and prescribed medicines, up to €70,000. If you want preventive check-ups as well, Safety starts from €569.40 a year.
Studying medicine at JLF UK? Can I insure all five or six years at once?
You can insure up to 24 months at once (€656) and renew from your klido account before it ends - a reminder comes 21 days ahead. A year at a time is €327.
Why Ružomberok and not Martin?
Martin has no Foreign Police office of its own: the Martin district is served by the office in Ružomberok. Book your visit there in advance.
Do I need insurance to renew my student residence?
The renewal application for study does not need a proof of health insurance, but you must stay insured for the whole stay. A renewal reminder from klido comes 21 days before your policy ends.
I have a Slovak government scholarship.
Holders of a Slovak government scholarship are covered by Slovak public health insurance, so you do not need commercial insurance. Ask the scholarship office to confirm your case.
I am from an EU country.
You do not need this insurance: your European Health Insurance Card (EHIC) covers necessary care in Slovakia.
Can I pay in instalments?
No, the premium is paid once for the whole period, by card. That is why shorter periods exist: you can start with a semester.
What happens if I am not insured?
The Foreign Police can fine you up to €1,600 (Act No. 404/2011, § 118).
