Studying from outside the EU

From India, Vietnam, China, Kazakhstan, Serbia or anywhere else outside the EU/EEA: the same rules apply at every university in Slovakia.

What is the best health insurance for international students in Slovakia?

It depends on what you need. For the residence permit Union Simple is enough: the Foreign Police accepts it, as the law sets no minimum cover (Act No. 404/2011, § 123). It costs students the same as everyone aged 6 to 59, €160 for a semester or €327 for 12 months, and you arrange it online in about 5 minutes. It covers urgent and acute care, accidents, hospital stays and prescribed medicines, up to €70,000. Safety, from €569.40 a year after a short health questionnaire, adds preventive check-ups (with a policy of 6 months or more) and care for conditions that start during the insurance.

Do I need commercial health insurance as a non-EU student?

Yes, unless you hold a Slovak government scholarship. On temporary residence for study you are not in the Slovak public health insurance, so you need commercial insurance no later than 3 working days after collecting your residence card (Act No. 404/2011, § 111(1)(d)). Students do not hand the proof in, but must show it at a police check.

Is urgent-care insurance (Simple) enough for a student residence permit?

Yes. The law asks only for a confirmation that you are health insured in Slovakia and sets no minimum cover or sum insured (Act No. 404/2011, § 123), and the Foreign Police accepts Union Simple. It covers urgent and acute care, accidents, hospital stays and prescribed medicines, up to €70,000. If you want preventive check-ups as well, Safety starts from €569.40 a year.

How much does it cost a student?

Simple costs students the same as everyone aged 6 to 59, paid once: €160 for a semester (5 months), €293 for an academic year (10 months) and €327 for 12 months, summer included. klido adds no fee of its own.

Can I arrange it in English?

Yes. The whole application, including the signature, is online in English, Slovak, Ukrainian, Spanish or Russian and takes about 5 minutes for Simple. After you pay by card, Union e-mails the confirmation, and it stays in your klido account.
